1. Can you tell us about your journey as a writer? What Inspired you to start writing?
I’m
a nurse by profession, but I’ve always been a book lover & have
read hundreds of books in my life. After reading a story that was pretty
average, I thought that I could write something better. I’m not really
sure where the story came from, it was just nesting in my head one
morning, and I began to type..
2. How do you develop your
characters? Do you draw inspiration from real-life people or create them
entirely from your imagination?
My characters just appear in my
head. I’m not sure if this happens to other authors! They’re not based
on anyone I know, just purely from my imagination.
3.
What is your typical writing process like? Do you follow a strict routine or write whenever inspiration strikes?
As
ideas pop in my head, I try and jot them down somewhere or make a note
in my phone. It can be tricky if you’re driving or at work, as it’s very
easy to think you’ll remember something but you actually forget after a
few hours. I will sometimes write in the evenings if I’ve been at work,
or weekends, but no set hours really. Just whenever I have any free
time.
4. How do you handle writers block or moments when you feel stuck in your writing?
I
have written several chapters at a time when on a roll, but there have
been times when one paragraph has taken a whole week if I’m not happy
with it. I may persevere for a couple of hours, but if I’m hitting a
wall, then it’s best to admit defeat, and try again the next day.
5. What role does research play in your writing? How did you approach the research process for your book?
Much
of my research is done online, but I did talk to some homeless people
whilst writing my book to get an insight of what street life is really
like.
6. How important is the setting or location in your stories? Do you prefer using real places or creating fictional ones?
I used a mixture of real places and fictional settings in Sam’s story. Finding names for a fictional town or suburb is great fun.
7. Are there any particular themes or messages that you try to convey through your writing?
I
didn’t intentionally attempt to convey any particular themes or
messages when I began writing the book; the story just played out by
itself as it went along. Looking back, I guess it does highlight the
plight of homelessness, and how a series of unfortunate events can
result in finding oneself in that position.
8. How do you handle criticism or negative reviews of your work? Do they affect your writing process or style?
I
think constructive feedback is important in any type of work. I will
try not to dwell on negative reviews, and instead hope that the critique
can assist me to improve my craft in future work.
9. Can you share any memorable fan interactions or feedback that have impacted you as an author?
I
have no fans at the moment, although I hope to get some! All I have
right now is the kind support of family and friends who have given me
the encouragement to continue on this journey.
10. Do you have any specific writing rituals or habits to help you stay focused and productive?
I
actually have no specific rituals or habits to help me focus. I just
start writing and often find it hard to stop. I don’t really
procrastinate either – I just want to get those ideas typed before I
forget them!
