Many people say "I'd like to write a book one day," but few people ever do, and it’s only when you begin the journey, that the enormity of the work involved becomes a reality. But honestly I enjoyed it, and I couldn’t even begin to estimate how many hours that it’s taken - but probably a couple of thousand I would imagine.
An interesting fact is that I actually wrote the last chapter very early on! This is because I always knew how the book would finish, and I had written less than a third of the book at this point.
I thought I was perhaps a bit weird, but since then, I've learnt through my author brother, and via blogs from other authors online, that this is quite common - in fact some authors actually recommend you do this. J.K. Rowling apparently started the Harry Potter series by writing the final chapter of her last book!
I think once that last chapter is in place, the destination is defined, and writing can become much easier. As my writing progressed, extra characters suddenly appeared in Sam's story, and the narrative evolved in a new and sometimes unexpected direction, but the destination was always where the story was headed.
And the feeling when you finally finish your book?
Thank god I'm finally done! Amazing! A massive achievement and the biggest accomplishment!
And then you start thinking about the second book...
